The last show is an interesting story by Paul Zachariah in which he narrates his failure to achieve his desire of making some possible changes to the end of the film which he watched.

One day, the narrator goes to the theatre to watch a film. The narrator carefully observe the plot of the film. The heroine belonging to a rich family falls in love with the hero who is a singer belonging to a poor family. The hero has become famous with the help of heroine. One day the heroine takes poison because she thinks that her lover has abandoned or left her. The hero keeps himself away because he discovered that he has blood cancer. The heroine is displeased by the neglect of the hero and she is convinced by her father to forget the hero and marry someone else. So, she gets engaged to a doctor living in Madurai. The hero and heroine lived in Madras. The heroine’s fiance is a well known doctor. The blood cancer of the hero was diagnosed by this doctor when the hero went to Madurai for a concern. The doctor meets the hero by chance and introduces the heroine and her father to him. He is not aware of the past life of the heroine and the hero.

Thus, the plot of the film reaches to the climax. The heroine finally learns the truth about her lover from her fiance. So, she takes poison. Her fiance rushes towards the closed door of her room on hearing the news, as also lover from his deathbed. The heroine crawls painfully to the door, open it, looks at her lover for a moment and falls dead. Her lover collapses, falls into the room through the open door and dies by her side. Thus, the film reaches to the tragic end. The narrator has observed the plot very carefully and he finds a smile on the heroine’s face as she catches sight of the hero through the half opened door. The narrator feels that there are many possibilities open to the hero and there are many opportunities to change the cause of their lives. The narrator also feels that there is still a possibility that things would end happily. He also thinks that the heroine’s fiance who is a doctor and a man of excellent character as well, would ne able to save both of them. The hero and heroine would then express their gratitude to gin and enter a new and joyful chapter of their lives.

The narrator reaches to the projection room of the theatre. He finds the projectionist rewinding the reels. The narrator talks to the projectionist about the many possibilities of the happy ending of the film. The narrator talks about many ways of changing the end of the film. But ultimately, the projectionist says that it is the last show of the film. These boxes must leave tomorrow. Thus, the narrator does not succeed in achieving his desire to change the end of the film.
