The term is taken from French. It is used in literary criticism to signify a literary species or what is often called literary form. It is a type of category into which literary works can be grouped according to their form, technique or purpose. The literary works are classified in numerous ways but some common names are tragedy, comedy, Epic, lyric, satire, novel, short story, essay, biography etc. From The Renaissance through much of the 18th century a number of critics applied rules which specified the proper subject matter structure, style and effect in each kind. There were certain rules which all the writers followed religiously. This things can clearly be seen the Neo classical age were formalism was popular. The writers followed blindly the rules set by classical writers. A tragedy shows man greater than what they are, where as a comedy shows them less than they are.An epic shows everything in a grand scale.

Since the romantic period, genres have frequently been conceived as convenient but rather arbitrary ways to classify works of literature. The major criteria for evaluating literature have not been specified to one genre but applicable to all kinds of works: sincerity, intensity, organic unity, high seriousness, maturity, ironically qualified attitude and so on. A Drama is generally believed to be genre where action is more important but in the modern absurd drama there is such things as action. Samuel Beckett’s WAITING FOR GODOT can be a very good example of this. Nothing happens there. The main Characters Didi and Gogo are waiting for Godot to come and they are still waiting for him at the end. They want to move away but the stage represents the world and there is no where else to do.
