The Narmada is considered as one of the holiest rivers in the world. Narmada is worshipped as a goddess by Hindus. It is believed that Narmada is the daughter of Lord Shiva. Stone polished by Narmada can be used as Shivaling – symbol of Lord Shiva. Rewa is another name for Narmada. The Narmada originates in the Narmada kund in the Amarkantak Hills. it travels through hills, forests, plains and ends by merging into the Arabian Sea. Narmada travels from Amarkantak Hills (Chhattisgarh) passing through Madhya Pradesh and ends in Arabian Sea near Bharuch in Gujarat. The Long Journey is about 1312 kilometres. During this journey, it creates various beautiful scenic places. The Narmada first forms Kapildhara waterfall. Near Jabalpur, it forms Dhuandhar waterfall where water falls from almost 30 meters with sound and mist. Then it flows through the world famous marble rocks at Beadghat. Then it collects water from 41 other rivers. Then it forms Markari falls. It travels through the table top mountains of Malwa and enters in Gujarat. In Gujarat, it passes through Vadodara district and Narmada district to Bharuch where it finally ends its journey meeting with sea in the Gulf of Khambhat. Every year people take the long and difficult religious Parikrama without crossing river. The Primary rule of the parikrama is that the river should never be crossed. This 2600 km long Parikrama is usually done walking barefoot. The Myth of Roopmati and Baaz Bahadur is related to he river, Narmada. A Beautiful maiden called Roopmati lived on the bank of Narmada. She loved the river so much that she had taken a vow not to eat without seeing the river. She was also a beautiful singer. Baaz Bahadur, the king of Mandu fell in love with Roopmati and wanted to marry her. She declined his love only because Mandu was far away fron the river. She could not see river from Mandu. The King built a palace called the Roopmati Pavillion atop the hill in Mandu from where she could directly see Narmada. Roopmati was still not happy as after river would not be visible due to the distant. It is believed that Roopmati was so devoted to the river that even river flowed underground and came to Rewakund, a pool made near Roopmati Pavillion.
